A person was critically injured in a shooting in central Brussels on Monday evening, according to the local Brussels Capital/Ixelles police.

“On Monday, 1 September 2025, at approximately 22:48, our services received a report regarding a person who may have been shot on Van Arteveldstraat,” said police spokesperson Ilse Van de Keere. “Our intervention teams immediately arrived at the scene. Upon arrival, they found an injured individual who was transported to hospital in very critical condition.”

The victim has been confirmed to be a 19-year-old man, who is still in hospital.

The area was immediately cordoned off, and the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office was informed. An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances of the incident, the police added.

Monday’s shooting is the last in a long line of violent attacks marring the capital in recent times, with the municipalities of Anderlecht and Sint-Jans-Molenbeek particularly ravaged by drug-related shooting incidents this year. Police have carried out an extensive operation to clamp down on gun violence in Anderlecht in June, while residents have gathered to seek solutions for possible safety measures in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek last week.
