Day after day, “the world watches in horror as Palestinians in Gaza are shot, wounded, or killed simply while trying to obtain food.” This was stated by the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, in a statement. According to the senior UN official, emergency medical teams “have confirmed the treatment of hundreds of trauma cases. Just yesterday, dozens of people were declared dead in hospitals after Israeli forces said they had opened fire,” he added. Fletcher described the situation as the result of “a series of deliberate choices that have systematically deprived two million people of the essentials needed to survive.” He reiterated the appeal of UN Secretary-General António Guterres for “immediate and independent investigations,” stressing that “these are not isolated incidents” and that “those responsible must be held accountable.” “No one should risk their life to feed their children,” Fletcher said, calling for the immediate opening of all crossings, the entry of life-saving aid from all directions, and the removal of all restrictions on the quantity and type of aid allowed. The humanitarian coordinator also demanded that UN convoys not be subject to delays or denials and reiterated the call for the release of hostages and the implementation of a ceasefire. “We have the teams, the plan, the supplies, and the experience. We must be allowed to operate,” he concluded, thanking the many member states that have joined the UN’s appeal.
